Initiative 31 would eliminate eminent domain in Mississippi. This is a fair and balanced coverage of the topic from fox news (no really, it is!). On the one hand, I would be infuriated if someone took my land and gave it to another for economic development. On the other hand, eminent domain hasn't really been abused here in Mississippi. This clip talks about the Toyota Plant in Blue Springs we worked on. The PUL alliance acquired one of its parcels from an old church that hasn't been open since the 1920's - and there was nobody even around apparently to claim the property.
What would this mean for LA's in MS? How come we just find out about this initiative one week before elections?
I personally would hate to eliminated eminent domain in MS. Like anything, there is a time and place for it. Without it, we will lose the ability to build future transportation infrastructure. We as citizens just need to make sure that when it is used, it is used for the right reasons.
